2007 Activities of the Caring for Creation Committee
Macalester Plymouth United Church
In 2007 we:
Conducted two educational programs, one a panel on garbage hauling and efforts of citizens in the Mac Plymouth neighborhood to reduce the number of large trucks using city alleys by choosing a single hauler; the other a committee-conducted program about creation-centered gardening.
Participated in planning of activities for the all-church retreat, suggesting a theme from Thinking Like a Mountain: Towards a Council of all Beings, by John Seed, Joanna Macy, Pat Fleming, and Arne Naess, to create a “Circle of All Beings”--animals presenting their needs to humans--and providing materials for this; recommended viewing of Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” which was purchased and viewed, also later by the youth of the church.
Planned and participated in the worship service for Earth Day, following up on the theme of the needs of earth's creatures and enlisting the aid of the children in singing and acting.
Planned and coordinated an Alternative Christmas celebration held in early December especially for the children of the church.
Created a “mitten tree” for offerings of warm accessories for children for winter, to reuse and to hand create these.
Continued to offer ideas and ways to live sustainably with regular articles in the church newsletter and announcements about special events
